Volunteering Positions

Unique volunteering opportunities directly with World Robot Olympiad Association

In more than 100 countries, WRO competitions are made possible through the dedication of organizations, sponsors, partners, and thousands of volunteers.

These committed individuals serve as coaches, judges, and event helpers, enabling students to explore robotics and innovation on a global stage. Our international events, including Open Championships and the annual International Final, could not happen without the time and effort of volunteers who contribute both during the events and in the crucial preparation phases.

We are excited to offer unique volunteering opportunities directly with World Robot Olympiad Association. As a global non-profit organization, we are happy to offer the chance to contribute to our worldwide robotics competition on a volunteering basis.

Volunteers for our international competitions

In 2025, WRO will have more international events than ever before. In addition to the International Final there will be four Open Championships in different world regions.

For the International Final we have a set up where volunteers help coordinate the tournament and are active for multiple years, this ensures consistency. For the Open Championships we are aiming to have a set up where a group of volunteers from the judging community acts as tournament head judges for the events, so we can maintain the same consistency.

Note: This position is only open for people with international WRO judging experience.

In the coming years we will have Open Championships in our world regions on a yearly base, which means that we will have events in Africa, Americas, Asia & Pacific, Europe and Middle East & North Africa. Usually, the International Final is supported by a lot of international volunteers, judges and people with experiences in an international setting. This knowledge base we want to build in our regions as well and support our Open Championship hosts with more experienced judges.

Therefore, we are looking for 1-2 persons per world-region / Open Championship to take the role as Tournament Head Judge. It is our goal to strengthen the relationship in the regions, and build on experience over the years, so we will preferably select volunteers from the regions as Tournament Head Judge.

  • Europe / Slovenia (02-05 September)
  • Asia / Philippines (19-21 September)
  • Americas / Panama (19-21 October)
  • MENA / Saudi-Arabia (24-26 October)

  • At the event: Act as the main contact persons for any questions about games & rules and help the hosting country to run the competition. You will not judge at the event yourselves and at every event there will be at least 1 person from WRO Association present to support you if needed.
  • After the event: Report to WRO and give feedback on problems and learnings from the event in general and about games & rules.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Fluent in English, in writing and speaking. Any other major language, especially a language that is important in the world region, helps but is not necessary.
  • Experience as a WRO judge at International Events in the past. Experience as a head judge on local or international level is a plus.
  • Familiar with all WRO competition categories, in case you are not familiar with all categories already you need to be willing to learn about the others.
  • Experience in moderating talks with different people, also in tense situations. (Imagine multiple other judges, coaches or parents standing in front of you and you need to decide.)
  • Ability to work together with your co-head judge, the team from the hosting country and the local and international judges.
  • Ideally: the willingness and flexibility to travel to the Open Championship in your region for multiple years.

Time required:

  • Availability to join some online calls in the months and weeks before the event. More communication work in the last 4 weeks before the event can be expected.
