The 2021 host has been chosen

With a core team that has more than 150 years of robotic experience between them, WRO Germany is well-equipped to host the international final 2021.

On Monday, November 11, 2019, WRO Germany, together with Ullrich Sierau, Lord Mayor of Dortmund and partners presented their bid to host the 2021 international final to the World Robot Olympiad Association. On Tuesday they received the positive news: WRO Germany has been chosen to host the big event.

The national organizer in Germany has hosted many finals and have experts for every competition category, design, photography, and videos. Even more impressive: The core team has more than 150 years of robotic experience between them.

"Our first conversations about hosting an international final began in 2016, followed by more and more preparations over the last two years. Now, everything is in place, from venue plan to a secured budget, so we are ready to organize the event with well-known German accuracy and quality," says Markus Fleige, Chairman of the TECHNIK BEGEISTERT e.V. association.

600 people ready to help

WRO Germany is run by the non-profit organization TECHNIK BEGEISTERT e.V. In the past seven years they have grown the WRO competition from 32 teams to 766 teams, gaining experience in organizing bigger and bigger events. Hosting the international final makes perfect sense, as their mission is to inspire more students to take an interest in robotics. More than 600 people are ready to help – regional partners, volunteers, former coaches and participants. Also, the non-profit organization will celebrate its 10th anniversary around the same time as the WRO final in Germany in November 2021.

The final will take place in Dortmund. WRO Germany and Dortmund won the Google RISE Partnership Award in 2014, which meant a boost for WRO and robotics activities in Dortmund and around. The city is located in North-Rhein-Westphalia, the area with most STEM activities in Germany, making it a perfect location for an international robotics competition. Markus Fleige says:

"It's really happening now. We are very pleased and see the decision as confirmation of our joint work with committed partners and volunteers to develop the WRO into one of the largest STEM initiatives in Germany. The anticipation is enormous and we want to get even more children and young people interested in technology on their way to 2021."

The city of Dortmund will host the international final with over 3,000 international guests, children and young people from 80 countries.
