Information about covid-19

News |
During the World Robot Olympiad season many local, national and international competitions take place. The outbreak of covid-19 can impact some of these events. There may be event cancellations in some countries/regions and travel to or from certain areas may be restricted.

We know many people have questions about how the WRO season will be impacted by the efforts to contain covid-19. We are following the development of covid-19 closely, and our most important priority is the safety of our participants, volunteers and visitors.

WRO Association will continue to monitor the situation and inform our national organizers. We will use the information given by the WHO and the Centers of Disease Control of the relevant countries.

For now, we want to communicate the following:

National WRO Competitions

WRO competitions in our member countries are organized by and under the responsibility of our national organizers.

  • All of our national organizers are advised to follow the policies on organizing events that have been or will be set by their national authorities, centers for disease control and public health institutions.
  • The decision of whether or not a local/regional/national event will take place, is the sole responsibility of the national organizer and the authorities in a country. WRO Association has no influence on this.

If you have any questions contact your national organizer.

WRO Friendship Invitationals

The Friendship Invitationals are organized by and under the responsibility of the national organizer in the country that is hosting the event.
Three WRO Friendship Invitationals are planned in 2020, in China (August), Italy (September) and the USA (December).

  • At the moment all hosting organizations continue preparations assuming that the events will take place as planned.
  • The deadlines for final registration for teams are 1st of June (China and Italy) and 1st of October (for USA).
  1. In the coming months the hosting organizations will continue to stay informed of the situation.
  2. When the final registration deadline is near the hosts and WRO Association will assess the situation and determine if the event can take place. The hosting organization has the final call in this decision.
  3. National organizers and teams can withdraw before the deadline and before they have finalized their registration.
  4. Unless an alternative process is explicitly stated, the hosting country will not give refunds after the registration is finalized.
  5. We advise national organizers who are planning to send teams to a Friendship Invitational to continue preparations and selecting teams, but to inform their community that the situation might change.

WRO International Final

The International Final is organized by and under the combined responsibility of the national organizer in the country that is hosting and WRO Association.
The 2020 International Final will take place in November in Montréal, Canada.

  • At the moment we continue with preparations assuming the event will take place as planned.
  • The registration window for the International Final will be from the beginning of August to October 8th.
  1. Before and during this time we continue to assess the situation and determine if actions need to be taken.
  2. When registration for the event opens, we will inform national organizers about finalizing the registration of their delegations.
  3. National organizers and teams can withdraw before the deadline and before their national organizer has finalized their registration.
  4. Unless an alternative process is explicitly stated, the hosting country will not give refunds after the registration is finalized.
  5. We advise all national organizers to continue their season and the selection process for the winning teams as usual, but to inform all participants about the situation.

For teams and visitors travelling to an international event

A proper travel insurance and cancellation insurance is more important than ever. If you are planning to travel to an international event make sure you are properly insured by contacting your insurance company, a travel agent or the airline company before making final bookings.
